Khonimaka Chiefdom in Kambia District has taken a major step toward strengthening local security and community policing with the official groundbreaking ceremony for a new police station, held on Saturday, 17 January 2026. The event reflects growing trust and cooperation between residents and the Sierra Leone Police.

The sod-turning ceremony was led by the Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Kambia Police Division, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Sao Vandy, in a calm and secure environment that underscored the prevailing peace and stability within the chiefdom.

Upon arrival, CSP Vandy and his team received a warm traditional welcome from chiefdom caretakers, who presented clean water and kola nuts as customary symbols of respect and goodwill. Women and children from the community further greeted the delegation with traditional songs, highlighting unity, hospitality, and broad community support for the police initiative.

Introducing stakeholders at the ceremony, the Chairman of Khonimaka Chiefdom, Mr. Safuna, described the area as largely peaceful, noting the absence of serious security concerns. He praised the strong collaboration between the police, local authorities, and community members, which he said has contributed significantly to maintaining law and order.

Speaking on behalf of the chiefdom leadership, caretaker Pa Alimamy Amara Kamara expressed heartfelt appreciation to CSP Vandy and the Sierra Leone Police for their consistent engagement and presence in the area. He attributed the chiefdom’s peace and stability to effective coordination, mutual respect, and sustained cooperation between the police and residents.

In a symbolic and hopeful moment, CSP Sao Vandy officially turned the sod, using a shovel of concrete to mark the commencement of construction works on the new police station. He revealed that the project is fully funded by community stakeholders, describing it as a powerful example of local ownership and commitment to community-driven policing.

The ceremony ended on a positive and forward-looking note, with community members thanking the LUC and his team for their dedication to peace and public safety in Kambia District. Residents pledged their full support for the successful completion of the project and reaffirmed their readiness to report any activities that could threaten peace or disrupt the construction process.
