The Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Kambia Police Division, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Sao Vandy, on Friday, 9 January 2026, led a safety and security assessment at Rokupr Wharf following a fatal road traffic accident that claimed two lives.

The review comes after a tragic incident on Thursday, 8 January 2026, at about 5:30 p.m., when a Renault van with registration number RC-6065 reportedly lost control and plunged into the Great Scarcies River. The vehicle was driven by Saidu Kamara of No. 4 Bonka Section, Kambia II, and had three passengers on board. Two male passengers, Amadu Conteh and Gbessay Sesay, both residents of Kamranka Village, were later retrieved from the submerged vehicle and pronounced dead. The driver was rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment.

At around 10:00 a.m. on Friday, CSP Sao Vandy led a rapid response patrol team to the accident scene, where he engaged traders, bike riders, marine officers, and transport operators on improving safety and security at the busy wharf. He stressed the importance of keeping designated parking areas clear and warned against trading or parking motorbikes close to boat docking points, which could pose serious risks to commuters.

The police chief also urged marine officers to ensure the availability and compulsory use of life jackets for all boat passengers, emphasizing that preventive safety measures are critical to reducing water-related accidents. Traders and transport operators were advised to strictly adhere to wharf regulations, maintain peace, and promptly report any suspicious or criminal activities to the police.

Beyond Rokupr Wharf, CSP Sao Vandy and his operations team extended patrols and surveillance to the Bamio Luma community and along Massama Road, including a known hideout referred to as Banga Farm. During the operation, the LUC issued a strong warning against the illegal sale and consumption of harmful drugs such as tramadol, cannabis sativa, and cocaine.

Reaffirming the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to public safety, CSP Sao Vandy assured residents of sustained security operations across Kambia District and called for continued community cooperation in the fight against crime.
