The Issues that Matter

By Sheku Putka Kamara

I here present a plethora of issues that are worth looking into and like each edition of this publication, the focus is to minimize negativity whiles encouraging massive positivity.

The rains are here again, but almost always, we tend to complain about the same issues over and again. The streets of Freetown are some of the untidiest places in the continent and you and I know why. Our people find it very convenient to litter the streets with ease. They fill up gutters and drainages for whatever reason (s) and the moment it begins to rain, the devastations would be visible for all to see. How long should we preach about these things? Sometimes, they are quick to point at politicians or what have you, but I wonder if it is our politicians that actually tell people to do some the things that they do. You see, this country needs serious fixing and all of us have roles to play. May we all get sense and continue to implement same, but it is beginning to appear as if some of our compatriots are indirectly comfortable with some of the environmental challenges that come whenever the rains take shape especially in Freetown. Blockages almost everywhere much to the disadvantage of our roads and environs. The streets would be left with no option, but to be home to the struggling terrains, making vehicular movements including of course bikes and Kekehs even more burdensome. In all of this, people still litter the streets.

Even when there’s some shower, there’d be garbage of filth, intentionally placed by roadsides with the hope that the rains should take things away. It’s almost habitual. We all see these things, but because we’re so good at inaccurate dramatization, issues would only become news when matters become and or get worse. I feel like not ending with May God help us because sometimes, you wonder if we are helping situations and ourselves!

Let us now touch on what I’d refer to as a call to be very vigilant!

As we all know, the rains are here and they are just getting started. We all should therefore be very careful in all we do and yes, it is recommended to be vigilant at home, Again, leaving homes and houses unattended or with no one in could be a recipe for something else. Armed and some unarmed thieves would be look forward to such opportunities. These are hard times and so we all should be mindful of our actions. Whiles we call on the police and other security apparatus to beef security measures, we should make our little efforts and to see that we protect our personal belongs because the importance of same cannot be overstated.

On another topic note, the FBC second semester examination should commence on Monday August 5th, 2024. Let us please show some level of understanding as university administrators and staff. With these rains, some students would inevitably have to go through tough means to get to campus. It is on that note that we all should be lenient enough and to see that there is a win-win situation. Students are also strongly encouraged not to misuse the opportunity. Some of them would wish to be unnecessarily dramatic and inaccurate. We’d not wish to see those levels. Until then, may we all do the right things.

Again, some young people all over the place – We may have exhausted the coco samba, kush and all other unauthorized drugs’ battle, but if you have been observing, we are beginning to have a good number of young people now parading the streets of Freetown, with very unkept and unpopular appears. This trend does not seem to promote decency. If not for anything, these attitudes have to be curbed. We have a lot of foreign nationals in this country and we’d not want them to experience some of these folks. Let us do what’s to be done and see that we put an end to this and now!

As always, whiles it may be impossible to eradicate all sorts of vices at this stage, it is equally important to make efforts in curbing some of the anomalies. With that, we may have taken and made frantic efforts to address burning issues.

On several occasions, we all may have heard of various postulations that opine that this is the only place that most if us call home. So, we owe it to ourselves to do what is right and not otherwise. Even with the challenges, we should remain resilient and to see that we do not give up!
