A high-level eight-day mediation mission led by international partners has concluded with renewed optimism for political cooperation and national stability in Sierra Leone. The engagement, facilitated by global and regional bodies, focused on advancing the Agreement for National Unity between the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) and the Government of Sierra Leone.

The mission, which ended on April 20, 2026, brought together representatives of the APC and government officials for intensive discussions aimed at strengthening dialogue, trust, and democratic governance. The outcome of the deliberations was formally presented during a press briefing, where a communiqué outlining key resolutions was delivered by Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang on behalf of the International Moral Guarantors.

The mediation team comprised representatives from ECOWAS, United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, and the Commonwealth Secretariat, whose collective role was to support dialogue and ensure adherence to democratic principles. Their involvement has been widely praised as instrumental in guiding the process toward constructive outcomes.

Members of the APC Negotiation Team described the discussions as “intensive and constructive,” highlighting the many hours of engagement that resulted in what they consider meaningful progress. They expressed appreciation to the international partners and their technical teams for facilitating a process marked by professionalism and mutual respect.

Acknowledgment was also extended to the Government delegation, led by Vice President Muhammed Juldeh Jalloh, for their commitment to dialogue throughout the week-long negotiations. Both sides were commended for demonstrating political will and a shared interest in national unity.

Within the APC ranks, recognition was given to key figures involved in the negotiation process, including Acting Chairman Alhaji Osman Yansaneh and National Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya, for their leadership and coordination. The Chief Negotiator and team members were also praised for their technical expertise and dedication.

The Ministry of Information and Civic Education, alongside members of the media—often referred to as the Fourth Estate—were acknowledged for their role in keeping the public informed and promoting transparency throughout the process.

Central to the discussions were the Tripartite Recommendations, a framework designed to address key political and electoral concerns while fostering inclusivity and accountability. Stakeholders have emphasized the importance of moving beyond dialogue to ensure the full and timely implementation of these recommendations.

Participants at the briefing underscored that the success of the agreement will depend not only on the commitments made but also on sustained collaboration and effective monitoring mechanisms. There is a shared expectation that all parties will uphold their responsibilities in the spirit of national interest.

The conclusion of the mission marks a significant step in Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic governance and political cohesion. Observers note that continued engagement between the APC and the government will be critical in maintaining the momentum generated during the talks.

As the country looks ahead, attention now turns to the implementation phase, where both sides have pledged to actively participate in and monitor progress. The outcomes of this process are expected to play a vital role in reinforcing stability and public confidence in Sierra Leone’s democratic institutions.
