The National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) is set to introduce a new digital pension administration platform aimed at making pension and social security services faster, easier and more accessible to contributors and pensioners across Sierra Leone.
The planned digital platform forms part of NASSIT’s ongoing digital transformation programme and is designed to address some of the long-standing challenges associated with traditional service delivery, including long queues, frequent visits to NASSIT offices and transportation costs incurred by users seeking basic pension services.
In a video released by the Trust on its new pension administration system, NASSIT explained that the platform will provide a range of self-service options, allowing contributors and pensioners to access important services from the comfort of their homes using mobile phones and other digital devices.
Among the key features of the new system is the ability for contributors to pay their social security contributions and monitor their funds directly from their mobile phones. Users will also be able to update their personal information, view statements and check details of registered dependents without having to visit a NASSIT office.
The platform will further allow contributors to plan for retirement by providing tools to help them project their expected benefits.
This feature is expected to give users a clearer understanding of their pension position and help them make better-informed decisions about their financial future.
NASSIT also plans to integrate the platform with major mobile money services, including Orange Money, Africell Money and QMoney.
The integration is expected to make it easier for beneficiaries to access their benefits and carry out transactions digitally.
For people without access to smartphones or reliable internet connectivity, the Trust says the system will also provide USSD services.
Through USSD, users will be able to perform selected transactions, make payments and check contribution information using basic mobile phones.
The new system is also expected to facilitate bank transfers, potentially reducing the need for contributors and pensioners to travel to banks, wait in long queues or make repeated visits to financial institutions to complete transactions.
Another feature of the platform will be SMS and email notifications, through which users can receive updates relating to transactions, contributions and benefits. This is expected to improve communication between NASSIT and its members while ensuring that users are kept informed about activities on their accounts.
NASSIT is also introducing digital identity verification as part of the transformation. The system is expected to incorporate biometric technologies, including voice recognition and fingerprint verification, to strengthen identification and authentication processes.
According to NASSIT, the digital transformation represents a “major transformation in service delivery,” with the new system intended to make pension services quicker, more flexible and easier to use.
“The transformation has been designed with pensioners and contributors at the centre,” the Trust said, emphasizing that customer satisfaction and improved access to services remain key priorities.
The initiative comes at a time when digital technology is increasingly being used to improve public service delivery and reduce the amount of time citizens spend accessing government-related services.
For NASSIT contributors and pensioners, the planned platform could significantly change how they interact with the Trust by allowing many services that previously required physical visits to be accessed remotely.
The Trust is encouraging contributors and pensioners to stay informed as preparations continue for the official rollout of the application. NASSIT says the new system will bring pension services closer to the people while improving efficiency and reducing some of the difficulties associated with conventional service delivery.
The planned launch therefore marks another significant step in NASSIT’s efforts to modernize its operations and provide more convenient, efficient and technology-driven services to contributors and pensioners nationwide.
