The new Chancellor and a cross section of Fullah and Islamic leaders, including Fullah Tribal Headman Almamy Alhaji Mohamed Sarjor Jalloh aka MEDSAJ
Sierra Leone’s President, Rtd. Bridg. Julius Maada Bio has appointed Ing. Mohamed Alie Jalloh as the new Chancellor of the Milton Margai Technical University. An installation ceremony for same was done on Thursday May 15th at the Great Hall of the MMTU Goderich campus.
Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie presided over the installation and urged the new chancellor to lead by example.
Vice Chancellor of MMTU, Dr. Philip Kanu welcomed the new Chancellor and looked forward to advanced working relationships.
The new Chancellor, Ing. Mohamed Alie Jalloh expressed sound optimism to lead. An excerpt of his speech is quoted below.
‘’Ages ago, if I had been told that I’d one day be pronounced as Chancellor of this great institution, I may not have affirmed same at the time, but as the Almighty would have it, here I am today.
As we are gathered here today, it behooves us to remind ourselves what a technical university is. Technical Universities (Technische Universität) are also often categorized as universities along with research universities, but specialize instead in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) research. However, they offer programs in other subject areas, as well and I am certain that such is the trajectory that our MMTU has adopted.
This role is unique and huge in every sense of the word. I am therefore entering into it with firm conviction and a willing urge to succeed and to do more.
My tenure would be marked by the implementation of some guidelines and principles on globalisation. As we now know, education is now a commodity and a number of appreciable global trends now exist. I wish to work with all and sundry and to see that we are able to realize the much-needed results and as we would expectedly know, team work makes the dream and bigger works. Together, we can do this.
Also, in future and where funds are readily available, I would also like us to establish a campus in Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, Lungi, Port Loko District (the Paramount Chief, PCMP Bai Shebora Sheba Gbereh 111 is already greatly looking forward to this).
I am also equally convinced that we should link with Cote D’ Ivoire as well as emerging European Countries in the sub-region like Slovania and Denmark for partnership and support through the European Training Foundation. HE President Bio may talk to his colleague the King of Jordan and his Slovenian counterpart who can also play a role to support us.
Again, we would like to leverage on our wide expertise and set up a business unit that generates funds. The plan is to see that the unit is able to generate its own resources, but initial funding could come from the UNDP or a similar body, through a project. To this end, we are calling on the VC and team to come up with a proposal as soon as possible so that we could get going. Mark you, we are the only university that specializes in education, engineering, technology and tourism as key/focus areas. Let us therefore build on these existing gains.
This brings me to the NQF. Sierra Leone-ACQF-II: a decisive step forward towards the NQF – capacity development programme (Part II).
Sierra Leone drafted the new NQF in 2024, and started a wide national stakeholders consultation process. MMTU would ensure to follow these strides and see that policies and set standards are adhered to.’’
