The National Revenue Authority (NRA) has announced that the newly constructed Jendema Border Post is significantly enhancing revenue collection and strengthening border security along the Sierra Leone-Liberia frontier.
Speaking during the National Civic Day Series in Pujehun District, the NRA’s Director of Research, Planning and Monitoring, Dr. Philip Kargbo, said the modern facility has improved the monitoring of cross-border trade and movement, resulting in increased tax revenue and more effective border management.
Dr. Kargbo emphasized the importance of domestic revenue mobilization in driving Sierra Leone’s development agenda, particularly at a time when international donor support continues to decline.
He noted that taxes collected by the NRA are helping to finance critical infrastructure and social development projects across the country, including road construction and the expansion of electricity services in Pujehun District.
“Domestic revenue remains the foundation of national development. The taxes paid by citizens and businesses are directly contributing to government efforts to improve infrastructure and public services,” he said.
The NRA official urged members of the public to request Goods and Services Tax (GST) receipts whenever they purchase goods and services, stressing that such practices promote transparency, accountability, and tax compliance.
According to Dr. Kargbo, increased tax compliance not only strengthens government revenue but also creates opportunities for economic growth and improved service delivery.
Looking ahead, he disclosed plans by the Authority to establish an operational presence in Solima as part of efforts to enhance service delivery and tap into the area’s growing economic potential.
He reaffirmed the NRA’s commitment to public education and engagement, noting that the institution will continue supporting the National Civic Day Series as a platform for raising awareness about the importance of taxation and civic responsibility.
The National Civic Day Series brings together government institutions and local communities to promote civic awareness, strengthen citizen engagement, and highlight ongoing government programmes aimed at improving the lives of Sierra Leoneans.
