Professor Ghizlaine Benjelloun, Vice President of the National Observatory for Children’s Rights in Morocco, 9 June 2025 has commended Sierra Leone’s Speaker of Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, for his steadfast commitment to promoting children’s and women’s rights.
Professor Benjelloun paid a courtesy call on Speaker Thomas at the Parliament Building in Freetown, expressing admiration for his leadership and lauding the establishment and support of the Kids’ Parliament initiative in Sierra Leone. She praised the Speaker and the entire Parliament for passing progressive legislation aimed at improving the welfare of children and women, particularly the abolition of child marriage.

She emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration between Morocco and Sierra Leone to further strengthen child and women’s rights across both nations.
In his welcoming remarks, the Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas extended a red-carpet reception to the Moroccan delegation. He reaffirmed Parliament’s dedication to championing the rights of vulnerable groups, highlighting that the Sixth Parliament under his leadership has prioritized children’s issues at the legislative level.

The Speaker noted significant progress in girls’ education, sharing that more girls are now attending school than boys, thanks to deliberate policies favoring the girl child. He also emphasized the 30% quota for women’s representation in Parliament and governance, underscoring Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to achieve gender equity.
Speaker Thomas assured the delegation of Sierra Leone’s continued commitment to enacting laws that protect and promote the rights of children and women. The courtesy visit concluded with a symbolic exchange of gifts, as Professor Benjelloun presented a token of appreciation to the Rt. Hon. Speaker.
