The former Secretary General of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and Deputy Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has called on party members to strengthen their commitment, unity, and discipline as the ruling party officially launched its Canada Region, describing the move as a significant milestone in expanding the party’s global footprint ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Koroma urged party supporters in Canada and across the diaspora to remain dedicated to the ideals and objectives of the SLPP, stressing that unity and collective responsibility remain critical to sustaining the party’s strength and advancing its political agenda.
He encouraged members to continue promoting the party’s principles of inclusive governance, democratic consolidation, and national development, noting that the active participation of supporters both within Sierra Leone and abroad would play a vital role in the party’s future success.
“The strength of the SLPP lies in the commitment and unity of its members,” Koroma told supporters, urging them to continue working together to deepen the party’s reach and consolidate its support base ahead of future elections.
The former Secretary General also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Sierra Leoneans living overseas, commending the diaspora for its consistent financial, logistical, and moral support to the party over the years. He said the continued engagement of members abroad has helped reinforce the SLPP’s organisational capacity while expanding its international presence.
Koroma further highlighted what he described as the major achievements of the administration of President Julius Maada Bio, citing governance reforms, investments in human capital development, and infrastructure expansion as evidence of the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Sierra Leoneans.
According to him, these initiatives demonstrate the SLPP’s determination to deliver sustainable development and strengthen democratic governance across the country.
Looking ahead, Koroma expressed confidence in the party’s preparedness for the 2028 general elections, stating that ongoing organisational reforms, grassroots mobilisation, and the establishment of overseas regional structures would further enhance the party’s electoral prospects.
He assured supporters that the SLPP remains focused on consolidating its achievements while broadening its support both domestically and internationally.
The inauguration of the SLPP Canada Region underscores the growing influence of Sierra Leone’s diaspora in the country’s political landscape. Beyond financial contributions, diaspora communities continue to provide professional expertise, policy perspectives, advocacy, and international networks that contribute to national development and political engagement.
Political observers note that as Sierra Leone’s political parties increasingly establish formal structures abroad, the participation of overseas members is becoming an important element in strengthening party organisation, mobilising support, and enriching democratic discourse.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior party officials, supporters, and Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Bio, who joined members in celebrating the establishment of the party’s newest overseas regional chapter.
