Parliament Urges Stronger Mpox Containment Measures

Sierra Leone’s Parliament has raised urgent concerns about the rising Mpox virus cases, pressing the government to strengthen containment measures and public health efforts, particularly to protect schoolchildren, the country has recorded over 1,000 infections and 11 deaths since January 2025, despite vaccination campaigns, signalling a growing public health crisis.

During the 46th plenary session on May 8, 2025, speaker Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas announced that the minister of Basic and senior secondary Education will be summoned to explain measures ensuring schoolchildren’s safety. Mpox is spreading rapidly, Thomas said, our pupils gather daily in crowded classrooms, the minister must outline steps to prevent a national crisis.

Hon. Matthew Sahr Nyuma, Leader of government Business, proposed inviting the minister of Health to discuss swift regulations under public health emergency laws to curb the virus’s spread, Parliament’s intervention aims to bolster efforts to control Mpox and safeguard communities across Sierra Leone.
