The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MOPED) on Thursday  officially announced the launch of NGO Week 2026 during a press conference held at its headquarters in Freetown. The event was presided over by the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Kenyeh Ballay, and brought together representatives of International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs), National Non-Governmental Organizations (NNGOs), and members of the media.

The press conference marked the beginning of a week-long series of activities designed to promote stronger collaboration among NGOs operating in Sierra Leone.

According to the Ministry, NGO Week aims to foster unity between international and national organizations, encouraging them to function as a cohesive body in support of the country’s economic planning and sustainable development agenda.

In her keynote address, Minister Ballay underscored the critical importance of partnership in addressing the nation’s economic and social challenges. She emphasized that effective collaboration between INGOs and NNGOs is essential to the successful implementation of Sierra Leone’s national economic planning strategy.

By aligning their efforts, she noted, organizations can avoid duplication, maximize resources, and achieve greater, more sustainable impact.

The Government of Sierra Leone remains committed to working with all development partners,” the Minister stated, Through stronger coordination and shared objectives, we can accelerate progress and ensure that development interventions reach those who need them most.

The launch event was also attended by the Chairman of the National Non-Governmental Organization network, Ibrahim B. Kamara, who delivered the welcome address. In his remarks, Mr. Kamara called on attendees and the broader public to reflect on the vital role NGOs continue to play in Sierra Leone’s development journey.

He highlighted the significant contributions NGOs have made in tackling pressing social, economic, and environmental issues across the country. From improving access to education and healthcare services to responding to natural disasters and supporting post-conflict recovery efforts, NGOs have remained central to national progress.

He further stressed that the strength of civil society lies in unity and collective action.

“This week provides an opportunity for us to evaluate our impact, strengthen our partnerships, and renew our commitment to serving the people of Sierra Leone,” Mr. Kamara said. He also welcomed members of the media, acknowledging their role in amplifying development initiatives and promoting public awareness.

The theme for NGO Week 2026 “Collaboration, Sustainability, and Local Empowerment” reflects the Ministry’s vision of inclusive development driven by strong partnerships. Organizers revealed that the week will feature a range of activities, including workshops, panel discussions, networking sessions, and collaborative forums.

These engagements are expected to create platforms for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and strategic alignment among stakeholders.

Speakers at the event elaborated on the importance of ensuring that development efforts are sustainable and locally driven. They emphasized that while international support remains valuable, empowering local organizations and communities is key to achieving long-term growth. By strengthening national institutions and building local capacity, NGOs can help ensure that development gains are maintained well into the future.

Minister Ballay reiterated that NGOs have played a crucial role in Sierra Leone’s development, particularly during times of crisis. She acknowledged their contributions during disasters, conflicts, and environmental challenges, noting that their interventions have complemented government efforts and brought relief to vulnerable populations.

She assured attendees that the government is fully committed to creating an enabling environment for NGOs to operate effectively.

According to her, collaboration between government institutions and development partners will remain a priority as Sierra Leone continues to pursue economic transformation and sustainable growth.

The Minister further expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for attending the press conference and for their continued dedication to national development. She encouraged NGOs to remain united, transparent, and accountable in their operations, emphasizing that trust and cooperation are essential to achieving shared goals.

As NGO Week 2026 gets underway, expectations are high that the initiative will strengthen coordination among organizations and reinforce their collective impact. With a renewed focus on collaboration, sustainability, and local empowerment, the week-long commemoration is set to highlight both the achievements of NGOs and the path forward for development in Sierra Leone.

The launch signals a renewed commitment by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and its partners to deepen cooperation and advance the nation’s economic agenda. For many stakeholders, NGO Week represents not only a celebration of past achievements but also a strategic step toward a more unified and effective development sector in Sierra Leone.
