Sierra Leone international striker Kei Kamara has retired from professional football at the age of 41, bringing an end to a career spanning nearly two decades across Europe, North America and international football.

Kamara, one of Major League Soccer’s most prolific forwards, leaves the game as the second highest scorer in MLS history, with 147 regular season goals. Across all club competitions in his long career, he is reported to have scored more than 200 goals, although no single official figure combines every competition across all clubs and leagues.

Born in Sierra Leone, Kamara began his professional journey in the mid 2000s before establishing himself in the United States, where his strength, aerial ability and consistency made him one of the most recognisable strikers in the league.

He became one of the most widely travelled players in MLS history, representing more than a dozen clubs including multiple high profile sides across the United States, as well as spells in England and other international competitions.

At international level, Kamara earned 45 caps for Sierra Leone, scoring 8 goals for the national team and serving as one of the country’s most experienced forwards over many years.

His career is widely described as spanning nearly 20 years, marked by longevity, adaptability and consistent goal scoring across different leagues and football cultures.

Kamara’s retirement marks the end of one of the most enduring careers by a Sierra Leonean footballer abroad, with his impact particularly felt in North American football where he ranks among the league’s all time great scorers.
