Residents of Majay Town and Femi Turner are counting their losses after heavy rainfall in the early hours of Monday, August 3, 2026, triggered severe flooding that caused widespread destruction to homes and personal property.
The torrential downpour, which residents said lasted for more than two hours, sent fast-moving floodwaters through the two communities, forcing many families to flee their homes in search of safety as water levels rose rapidly.
Eyewitnesses described the rainfall as the heaviest experienced since the beginning of the rainy season in May, with floodwaters inundating houses, damaging household belongings, and leaving several areas submerged.
Residents of Majay Town said the flooding was among the worst the community has experienced in recent years. They reported that the rising waters swept through residential areas with little warning, leaving many people unable to salvage their possessions.
“We watched the water enter our homes within minutes,” one resident said. “Many families lost furniture, clothing, food supplies, and other valuable belongings. We are now trying to recover from the damage.”
Although no official casualty figures have been released in connection with the flooding in Majay Town and Femi Turner, residents said the incident has displaced several families and disrupted normal activities across the affected communities.
As of the time of publication, the exact number of households affected and the total cost of the damage had not been confirmed. Relevant authorities are yet to issue an official statement or complete an assessment of the destruction.
The incident has renewed concerns over poor drainage systems and the increasing impact of heavy seasonal rains on vulnerable communities. Residents are calling on the Government, disaster management authorities, humanitarian organisations, and other partners to provide emergency assistance to affected families and to implement long-term flood mitigation measures.
With the rainy season expected to continue over the coming months, community members have also appealed for improvements to drainage infrastructure and greater public awareness on flood preparedness to help reduce the impact of future disasters.
