The Female Parliamentary Caucus, in partnership with International IDEA and supported by European Union funding, hosted a two-day training session on June 15–16, 2025, engaging members of the caucus and selected civil society organizations, this initiative aims to bolster participants’ understanding of Parliamentary standing orders and enhance accountability in implementing the gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE) Act.
At the opening, International IDEA’s country director, Dr. Mamoud Bah, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to strengthening democratic institutions and governance in Sierra Leone. Highlighting International IDEA’s role in facilitating the 2023 tripartite agreement, he noted ongoing preparations to enact its key recommendations, including legislative reforms. our mandate is to support inclusive political processes, Dr. Bah emphasized.
Hon. Wuyatta Songa, President of the Female Parliamentary caucus, underscored the urgency of reforming parliamentary procedures to promote gender equity, this timely training equips female MPs to critically engage with standing orders and advocate for inclusive amendments, she said, stressing the need for gender-responsive governance.
The training aligns parliamentary practices with the GEWE Act, empowering legislators to identify gender gaps and propose actionable reforms. Participants are expected to leave with enhanced skills to champion legislative changes, fostering a more inclusive parliamentary representation in Sierra Leone.
