Residents of Daru township in the Jawie Chiefdom have raised serious concerns over growing insecurity at night, citing a rise in harassment and “chasing” incidents that have left many living in fear.
According to the report, several individuals have either been harassed or pursued at night, creating an atmosphere of anxiety for residents who must move around the township for work, emergencies, or personal obligations.
Community members say the situation has disrupted normal life, with many now avoiding unnecessary movement after dark due to safety fears. The lack of adequate street lighting in key areas has further worsened the situation, making it easier for perpetrators to operate under the cover of darkness.
The renewed concerns come in the wake of a tragic incident that recently shook the township—the death of Sallu Moina Kanneh, a Finance Officer of the Ndomakeh Federation. Kanneh was reported missing on March 11 after leaving his home in the early hours for prayers. His body was later discovered on March 17 in a river at Sasahun village.
The Sierra Leone Police in the Daru Division have since launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, though authorities are yet to provide further updates.
For many residents, the incident has heightened an already growing sense of vulnerability. The appeal submitted by Aruna calls on local authorities, security agencies, and community stakeholders to urgently investigate the reported nighttime disturbances and take decisive steps to restore public confidence.
“The people of Daru deserve to feel safe in their own community, both during the day and at night,” the statement emphasized.
Residents are particularly urging authorities to improve street lighting infrastructure and increase police patrols across the township, especially during late hours when most of the reported incidents occur.
As calls for intervention grow louder, the people of Daru remain hopeful that swift and coordinated action will be taken to address the security concerns and ensure the safety of all residents.
