Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), has announced the suspension of its participation in all parliamentary activities, citing the continued detention of its Secretary General, Lansana Dumbuya Esq.
The decision was disclosed on Thursday by the party’s Parliamentary Leader, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, during a press briefing held outside the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters of the Sierra Leone Police.
According to Hon. Kargbo, the boycott will remain in effect until Dumbuya is released from police custody. He stated that all APC Members of Parliament have been instructed to immediately disengage from parliamentary proceedings as a form of protest against what the party describes as an unlawful and politically motivated detention.
“The continued detention of our Secretary General is a direct affront to democratic principles and the rule of law,” Hon. Kargbo told journalists. “Our participation in Parliament cannot continue under these circumstances.”
The APC leadership maintains that Lansana Dumbuya was invited by the police for questioning in connection with remarks he made during a recent large-scale party meeting. However, the party insists that his ongoing detention lacks legal justification and represents an abuse of state power.
Hon. Kargbo further warned that the situation poses serious implications for democratic governance, arguing that the arrest and detention of opposition figures undermine political freedom and due process.
As of the time of the press briefing, the Sierra Leone Police had not issued an official statement regarding the detention or the specific allegations against Dumbuya.
The boycott by the APC marks a significant escalation in tensions between the opposition and the government, raising concerns about legislative business and political stability in the country if the standoff persists.
