Leakage in the system in Sierra Leone is a serious cause for concern as government continues to lose billions in revenue. If these leakages are controlled or stopped there will be no need for government to go borrowing for unfavourable strings attached. Also, the incessant cap- in- hand beginning just to deliver services will stop.
There is no need for EDSA to be indebted when the payment system is prepaid. The top management of EDSA moved from Freetown to the south- east to clamp down on illegal connections. So without prior notice, the team including the Director General Joe Lahai, national PRO, SahrNepor, regional PRO, Mohamed Bash K Sheriff, civil society and journalists made on- the – spot checks on businesses and residents who connected to the grid illegally.
There were “shocking discoveries and revelations”, according to SahrNepor and the exercise is going to save government lots of money. When asked what they are going to do with offenders the reply was ” legal action and fine which is not going to be compromised.” This is an exercise that many residents in Bo and Kenema are pleased about and that it is going to ” save the name of EDSA workers who have been accused of aiding and abetting the illegal connections”, one resident remarked.
The DG, Joe Lahai was in a no- nonsense mood. It is still a wait and see as some people are eagerly waiting for the end. The south-east that was reputed for notorious black out is now enjoying steady flow of electricity and businesses are now booming. This is what EDSA ” does not want to see reversed”, Bash K. Sheriff quipped. So, DG, Joe Lahai has started from his own home town, I don’t think they are going to spare any region in the country.
