Madam Musayeroh Barrie, Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), actively participated in the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) 2025, held from February 10 to 12 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The symposium, themed “The Next Flight: Innovating for a Sustainable Tomorrow,” convened over 1,500 participants from 108 countries, including 32 senior ministerial officials, setting a new attendance record for GISS events.

The GISS 2025 focused on the latest developments in aviation technology and sustainable practices, emphasizing international cooperation to achieve global sustainability goals.

Madam Barrie’s involvement underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to advancing its aviation sector through global collaboration. Reflecting on the event, she stated, “Participating in GISS 2025 has provided invaluable insights into sustainable aviation practices. We are dedicated to implementing these strategies to enhance Sierra Leone’s aviation infrastructure.”

A key highlight of the symposium was the announcement of five international commitments aimed at enhancing the future of civil aviation. These commitments align with ICAO’s 2026-2050 Strategic Plan, which envisions a safe, secure, and sustainable international civil aviation system.

Stakeholders from various sectors shared their perspectives on the symposium’s impact. Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the ICAO Council, remarked, “The commitments secured during GISS represent concrete steps toward achieving our aspirations of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and zero aviation fatalities.”

Industry experts also highlighted the importance of such gatherings. A representative from the General Civil Aviation Authority of the UAE noted, “Hosting GISS 2025 in Abu Dhabi underscores our dedication to fostering international collaboration in aviation.”

The symposium featured discussions on advanced technologies reshaping airspace management, enhancing safety protocols, and promoting environmental stewardship. Participants explored how innovations in artificial intelligence and sustainable fuels can drive the future of aviation.

Madam Barrie’s participation in GISS 2025 reflects Sierra Leone’s proactive approach to integrating global best practices into its aviation sector. By engaging in these international dialogues, the SLCAA aims to elevate the nation’s aviation standards, ensuring safety, security, and sustainability for all travellers.

As the global aviation community continues to navigate challenges such as climate change and increasing air traffic, events like GISS 2025 play a crucial role in shaping a collaborative and innovative path forward. Sierra Leone’s active involvement signifies its commitment to being part of this transformative journey.
