Rising Street Gang Activities Threaten

By Kadiatu A Turay

Lungi, Sierra Leone, once a peaceful and serene community, Lungi is now grappling with the growing menace of street gang activities. Residents and local authorities are alarmed as the rise in gang related crimes, including extortion, vandalism, and theft, threatens the area’s security and socio-economic stability.

The Surge in Gang Related Crimes

The increase in criminal activities has left many residents living in constant fear. Reports of motorbike theft, shop burglaries, and violent clashes between rival gangs are becoming all too common. A particularly disturbing incident occurred last week in Masoila, where a confrontation between two notorious gangs left three individuals injured, one critically. “These gangs seem to operate without fear of consequence,” said Khadija Sesay, a shop owner in the affected area.

Impact on the Community

The economic toll of gang activities has been devastating. Local businesses, already struggling due to economic challenges, are now burdened with extortion demands. “We are forced to pay protection money or risk having our shops vandalized,” lamented a frustrated business owner, Mohamed Bangura. The social impact is equally concerning, as parents fear their children may fall prey to the gangs’ influence. “These gangs promise our youth easy money and a sense of belonging, but it’s a dangerous trap,” said Fatmata Kargbo, a mother of three.

Police Response and Ongoing Challenges

In response to the growing threat, the Lungi Police Division has ramped up efforts to combat gang activities. Over the past month, the police conducted several raids, resulting in the arrest of 15 suspects. However, their efforts are hindered by limited resources and a lack of community cooperation. “We need the public’s support to gather intelligence and bring these criminals to justice,” stated Inspector Abdul Conteh of the Lungi Police. He also emphasized the importance of equipping the police with modern tools to enhance their efficiency.

Despite the arrests, the gangs remain active, adapting their operations to avoid detection. “It’s a game of cat and mouse,” Inspector Conteh added. Community members have expressed frustration over what they perceive as slow action by law enforcement.

Stakeholders Call for Immediate Action

Community leaders and other stakeholders have stepped up to address the issue, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach. Chief Pa Alhaji Jalloh of Kamasondo stressed, “The solution goes beyond arrests; we must tackle the root causes like unemployment and lack of education.” He called for the establishment of skill acquisition canters to engage the youth in productive ventures.

Faith based organizations have also joined the conversation. Reverend Joseph Koroma of the Lungi Methodist Church urged the community to work together in fostering unity and peace. “We must not allow our youth to be consumed by violence and crime,” he said during a recent town hall meeting.

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are advocating for rehabilitation programs targeting at risk youth. “We need to offer them alternatives, such as vocational training and mentorship programs,” said Mariatu Kargbo, a representative from Youth Empowerment Sierra Leone.

The Role of Families and Communities

As a resident and writer deeply connected to the Lungi community, I believe that families and communities play a crucial role in preventing youth from joining gangs. Parents must actively engage their children, instilling values of discipline and hard work. Communities should create safe spaces for youth to express themselves positively, such as sports clubs, cultural groups, and community service initiatives.

Moreover, it is vital to break the stigma associated with seeking help. Youth caught up in gang activities should have access to counselling and support systems that help them reintegrate into society.

Government Commitment to the Cause.

The government has pledged to intensify efforts to combat gang activities and support at-risk youth. A recent statement from the Ministry of Youth Affairs highlighted plans to collaborate with local authorities and international partners to establish youth empowerment programs. “We cannot afford to lose our youth to crime and violence. They are the future of this nation,” said Youth Minister Mohamed Orman Bangura.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education has proposed reforms aimed at improving access to quality education, a move seen as crucial in addressing the underlying factors that push young people toward gang life.

The Way Forward

To effectively tackle the gang menace, a multiple pronged approach is essential. This involves strengthening law enforcement, providing economic opportunities for the youth, and fostering a sense of community responsibility. While the police continue their efforts to apprehend gang members, it is imperative that the government, NGOs, religious organizations, and the community at large collaborate to address the deeper societal issues fuelling gang activities.

The rise in gang related crimes is a pressing issue that requires immediate and collective action. As Lungi residents await concrete solutions, there is hope that a united front will help restore peace and security to the community. Only then can the area reclaim its reputation as a safe and welcoming place for all.
