WIMSAL Kicks Off Regional Campaign for Female SLAJ Candidates

The Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL) has officially launched a regional campaign in support of female candidates contesting key executive positions in the upcoming elections of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), the campaign commenced in Kenema, located in the Eastern Region of the country, and aims to build momentum and garner support for women vying for leadership roles within the national journalism body.

A high-powered WIMSAL delegation is leading the campaign, including Deputy Campaign Manager Khadija Jalloh, Assistant Financial Secretary Alimatu Jalloh, and Assistant Secretary General Millicent Obries Mansaray, their presence underscores the organization’s commitment to gender equality, mentorship, and empowerment within the media landscape, the three female candidates being championed during this campaign include Umu Bakarr, contesting for the position of Public Relations Officer, Mariama Alice Turay, running for Organising Secretary, Lamuella Tarawallie, vying for Assistant Secretary General

According to WIMSAL, this initiative is not just about supporting individual candidates, but also about promoting long-term gender inclusivity in decision-making spaces within SLAJ, the campaign provides a platform for women to showcase their qualifications, share their visions for the association, and engage directly with members across the regions.

We are here to amplify the voices of women in journalism and ensure that female representation is not only symbolic but effective, said deputy campaign manager Khadija Jalloh, these women have the capacity, the experience, and the vision to contribute meaningfully to the growth and transformation of SLAJ.

The Kenema launch marks the first leg of the campaign tour, which will extend to other regions including the North, South, and western area in the coming days, the campaign activities will feature regional meetings, interactive dialogues with journalists, and media engagements designed to highlight the leadership potential of the female candidates.

WIMSAL’s campaign is part of a broader national conversation around equity and representation in Sierra Leone’s media sector, where women remain underrepresented in leadership roles. By taking this bold step, the organization aims to not only influence the upcoming elections but to inspire a new generation of women journalists to take up leadership roles and become agents of change, as SLAJ elections draw near, WIMSAL is calling on all journalists; male and female to support competent candidates who are committed to transparency, professionalism, and inclusive governance.
