A tragic fire outbreak has claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl and left several families homeless after it tore through the Bottom Oku community in Wellington, on the eastern outskirts of Freetown.

According to local reports, the fire erupted in the densely populated settlement and spread with alarming speed through a cluster of makeshift “pan body” structures—homes largely constructed from corrugated iron sheets and other highly flammable materials. Within minutes, the blaze engulfed more than ten houses, giving residents little or no time to rescue their belongings.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and desperation as families scrambled to escape the inferno. Amid the chaos, the young girl tragically lost her life, marking a heartbreaking loss that has sent shockwaves through the community.

Personnel from the National Fire Force of Sierra Leone responded promptly to distress calls and, with the support of local youths and community members, battled the flames for hours before eventually bringing the situation under control. However, by the time the fire was contained, widespread destruction had already occurred.

Authorities have since launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Preliminary findings point to a possible electrical fault, though officials say a full assessment is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The aftermath has left many families displaced, with survivors now grappling with the loss of their homes, personal belongings, and means of livelihood. Makeshift shelters and overcrowded conditions have become the immediate reality for those affected.

Community leaders and residents are now appealing for urgent humanitarian assistance, including food, clothing, temporary shelter, and medical support. There are also growing calls for authorities and stakeholders to address the recurring risk of fire outbreaks in informal settlements, particularly in areas where housing conditions and electrical connections remain unsafe.

This latest tragedy underscores the vulnerability of densely populated communities in Sierra Leone, where fire incidents continue to pose a serious threat to lives and property. As investigations continue, many are left mourning, while others face the daunting task of rebuilding from ashes.
