Vice President Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has intervened in a dispute surrounding the proposed demolition of a mosque at Koidu Government Hospital, engaging hospital management and representatives of the Muslim Jamat in Koidu to facilitate an amicable resolution.
The engagement focused on addressing concerns raised by the Muslim community over plans to demolish the existing mosque to pave the way for the expansion of Koidu Government Hospital.
During the discussions, representatives of the Muslim Jamat reaffirmed their support for the hospital’s development plans but stressed the need for an alternative place of worship and a practical transitional arrangement before the proposed demolition takes place.
Drawing on his experience in conflict resolution and mediation, Vice President Juldeh Jalloh emphasised that his intervention was aimed at facilitating dialogue and ensuring that the concerns of both parties are addressed peacefully.
He encouraged hospital management and the Muslim community to engage constructively, demonstrating goodwill and mutual understanding in finding a workable solution that would allow the hospital’s expansion plans to proceed without disregarding the religious needs of worshippers.
Meanwhile, Koidu District Medical Officer, Dr Mohamed Gbessay, assured the Vice President that the hospital management remained committed to addressing the concerns raised and working towards an amicable settlement.
Following the meeting, the Vice President visited the mosque earmarked for demolition, as well as an alternative mosque located approximately 100 metres away, which has been identified as a temporary place of worship should the demolition proceed.
The intervention highlights the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation in resolving community concerns, particularly where development projects intersect with religious and social interests.
It also underscores the need to balance the expansion of essential public health infrastructure with the protection of community interests and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.
