Tension is rising in Kholifa Mabang Chiefdom, Tonkolili District, as residents express mixed reactions to the petition case filed against the newly elected Paramount Chief, Alhaji Abdul Kamara III. The controversy stems from allegations surrounding the legitimacy of the electoral process and the qualifications of the winner.

The petition, filed by one of the contestants, alleges procedural irregularities, claiming that the election violated specific customary and legal provisions. The complainant argues that some eligible voters were disenfranchised and questions the qualifications of Alhaji Abdul Kamara III, claiming he does not meet the traditional requirements to serve as Paramount Chief.

The petition was lodged by Pa Mohamed Koroma, a prominent contender in the recent elections. Koroma, who has a strong support base in Kholifa Mabang Chiefdom, asserts that the election process was manipulated to favor his rival.

The election was conducted on October 25, 2024, in the Chiefdom’s central town, Matotoka. Overseen by the Provincial Secretary and local government officials, the process attracted significant public interest, given the importance of the Paramount Chieftaincy in preserving traditional governance.

The petition has left residents polarized. Supporters of Alhaji Abdul Kamara III argue that the election was free and fair, highlighting his popularity and vision for the chiefdom. “We believe in his leadership and trust that he will bring development to our chiefdom,” said Haja Fatmata Sesay, a local market woman.

On the other hand, opponents believe the petition is valid. “Our traditions must be respected, and if the allegations are true, the election should be nullified,” remarked Pa Alimamy Sankoh, an elder in the community.

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has confirmed receiving the petition and has assured all stakeholders of an impartial investigation. “We are committed to resolving this issue through proper legal and traditional channels,” said a ministry representative. The court hearing is scheduled for next week in Magburaka.

As the legal process unfolds, residents remain anxious about the outcome. Community leaders have called for calm and urged residents to avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

The decision from the court is expected to have far-reaching implications for the governance and unity of Kholifa Mabang Chiefdom, making this a critical moment in its history.
