Tucked away at 2 Wesley Street, just off Pademba Road near the Bathurst Street junction, the Planned Parenthood Association of Sierra Leone (PPASL) is providing life-saving and life-changing health services around the clock, with a mission rooted in community well-being and access to quality care, PPASL’s Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) facility stands as a beacon of hope for thousands of Sierra Leoneans who seek confidential, affordable, and professional health services.
Speaking to this reporter, Nurse Mariama Koroma, one of the lead midwives at the facility, emphasized the organization’s commitment to ensuring that no one is turned away regardless of the hour, we operate 24 hours a day, and our doors are open to anyone in need whether it’s a woman in labor, a couple struggling with infertility, or someone seeking STI testing or counseling. We are here, always,” Nurse Koroma said.
The PPASL Wesley Street Clinic offers comprehensive health services that include, maternal health Services including antenatal and postnatal care, infertility and Subfertility management, diagnosis, treatment, and management of sexually transmitted Infections (STIs), including HIV counseling and testing, relationship and sexual counseling for couples and individuals, surgical and minor Procedures, supported by an in-house theater, inpatient Care for patients needing observation and follow-up,
PPASL’s modern laboratory conducts a wide range of diagnostic tests, all handled by trained professionals and guided by international best practices. Some of the tests include, hepatitis B (HBsAg), H. Pylori, VDRL and TPHA (for syphilis), Widal Test (for typhoid), Malaria Parasite Screening (MPS), Sickling and Blood Grouping, HIV Testing, Semen Analysis, Urinalysis and Vaginal Swab Tests, Hemoglobin and Random Blood Sugar (RBS), Skin Snip Test for Onchocerciasis
People often delay going to the hospital because of cost or fear of judgment. At PPASL, we make it a priority to deliver care that is not only affordable but respectful and confidential, said Dr. James Kallon, the resident medical officer.
With CCTV cameras, professional security, and a team of doctors, nurses, counselors, and lab technicians on standby day and night, the clinic has become a trusted haven for those in need of reproductive and general health services, Sometimes we receive women in labor at 2 a.m., or young people seeking STI care in the evening. We never close, added Nurse Koroma.
