As part of efforts to tackle the Kush menace in Sierra Leone, the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu has said the police force is committed to breaking the chain of supply and intake of illegal substances, mainly Kush, in the country, noting many strides have been made to halt the menace.
The police boss was speaking in an engagement with a delegation under the banner: Israel United in Christ, a non-governmental Christian organization with its headquarters in the United States of America on Friday, April 12, 2024 at police headquarters in Freetown.
Captain Osee Israel, who headed the team, said the purpose of the visit was for the organization to acquaint themselves with the Inspector General of Police and further disclosed their interest to offer a helping hand in the fight against Kush through spiritual deliverance.
According to him, Kush is not just a physical problem but a spiritual problem as well, and for which they (Israel in Christ) are desirous of changing the mindset of people. He noted that, as an organization, they are ready to share strategies with the government in the fight to end the abuse of Kush in the country. “We will be teaching people to know who they are and how they can change their ways”, he said.
In his response, the Inspector General of Police welcomed the team to Sierra Leone, noting that the Sierra Leone Police shares with them the same concern to eradicate Kush in the country, while explaining government’s efforts so far, citing the declaration of the national health emergency by the President, setting in motion a prototype of the structures that were in place to tackl COVID-19, and the establishment of a public rehabilitation center for drug victims.
Mr. Sellu said police have made lots of strides in the fight, pointing to sustained nationwide sensitizations and awareness raising campaigns conducted on a daily basis, coupled with deliberate police operations to disrupt the supply chain. He said the SLP is committed to eliminating the abuse of drugs, especially Kush. He added that they have so far been able to achieve about 60% in the area of disrupting the supply chain.
The delegation promised to hold further engagements with the Inspector General of Police on the subject matter.
