Police Arrest A 28-Year-Old Pharmacy Technician with Alleged Stolen Free Healthcare Drugs

By Thaimu T Kamara

In what appears to be a major success in the ongoing crackdown against the illegal diversion of government-supplied medicines meant for vulnerable groups, Police in Kambia District have apprehended a key suspect in connection with the unlawful possession of assorted Free Health Care (FHC) drugs.

At approximately 9:40 PM on Wednesday, 18th June 2025, a sharp-eyed Ministry of Health official, identified as Mr. Michael (a national MOH staff), intercepted and promptly handed over to the police 28-year-old Emmanuel Kamara, a Pharmacy Technician at the Kambia Government Hospital. Kamara was allegedly found in possession of a suspicious quantity of assorted drugs believed to be from the Free Health Care stock ” a government-supplied initiative designed to benefit pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under five years of age.

The seized drugs, strongly suspected to have been unlawfully removed from the hospital’s central medical store, have since been transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further examination and legal processing. Meanwhile, suspect Emmanuel Kamara remains in protective custody at the Kambia Police Divisional Headquarters, where he is cooperating with investigators.

The Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Kambia Division, Chief Superintendent of Police Bob Musa Nazlic Mansaray, has reaffirmed the police’s commitment to safeguarding public institutions and holding perpetrators of medical theft accountable. He further appealed to the hospital’s management and staff to remain vigilant and proactive, particularly in monitoring internal movement and access to medical stores, as part of enhanced security protocols.

This incident has reignited calls for tighter oversight and routine audits within public health facilities to curb the rising trend of internal drug theft, which undermines national health objectives and endangers the lives of Sierra Leone’s most vulnerable citizens.

The public is hereby urged to remain alert and report any suspected criminal activity to the nearest law enforcement office. Together, we can protect the integrity of our health care system.
