Gbundorbu village is a remote and hard- to- reach area in the Bo district. Due to its location, it is facing so many challenges from health, social amenities to education. So in the area of education, Action Aid SL has decided to intervene to make the difference especially in line with the government’s flagship program, free quality education. And building on an earlier help Action Aid SL had done in 1992 with the construction of a three- classroom block. This class three- classroom – block had become over populated and congested so Action Aid SL saw the need for an additional three – classroom – block. So, upon a site visitation by the board of Action Aid SL, four hundred and seventy- seven thousand, five hundred and seventeen new Leones (Nle477,517) was approved for the construction of another school structure of three classrooms, an office and a store. This time a hand- dug well and two toilet facilities with three drop- holes in each. These facilities are going to enhance a healthy, safe and convenient learning environment.
Desmond Kanneh, the regional head of Action Aid SL for the south- eastern region revealed to this medium that they ” have been giving learning materials to the school, helping some teachers to acquire teaching certificates through distant learning and putting 50 pupils from the school with educational support and providing the school also with recreational equipment like football, volleyball etc” . Desmond Kanneh admitted that “the impact of this educational support is not going to be immediate but over time it will change so many things for the people of Gbundorbu.” The town chief, Abubakar said he is very much in appreciation of ” the inclusivity and gender balance approach of Action Aid SL as the women of the town are now coming out to be part of decision making and not just staying in the kitchen.” Hawa Jalloh, the School Management Committee chair said that ” two communities are going to benefit from this structure,” and called on Action Aid SL to not just stop so far but to think of giving them a secondary school so that their ” kids will stop walking four miles to access secondary education which has its attendant risks.” A class six pupil, Alfred Kallay was so delighted that he thanked Action Aid SL and said he is going to use the learning opportunities ” to become president of Sierra Leone.”
