Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) has reacted to a recent video which went viral on social media raising alarm on what appears to be cracks on the Makambo Bridge along the Makeni-Magburaka Road in Bombali District. In a press release dated 19th August 2024, SLRA said, after inspection of the bridge by their engineers, it was discovered that the bridge is in in good condition.

“The bridge structure itself is in good condition, and there is no cause for alarm,” an SLRA confirmed. However, the inspection revealed that the road section adjacent to the bridge on the Magburaka side has experienced some settlement. The settlement on the transition pavement has caused cracks on the road pavement near the bridge abutment and at the end of the transition pavement,” the country’s roads agency explained.

According to SLRA, the cause of the cracks on the surface is linked to recent flooding which is said to have “caused water ingress, leading to the weakening and subsequent settlement of the transition pavement.”

The Authority assured that they are working in collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Public Asset fix the issue while it is being monitored closely.

“Immediate action will be taken to rectify the defects,” SLRA reassured the public, adding that they are dedicated to maintaining safe and reliable roads nationwide; while encouraging the public to stay informed through official channels.
