Water Resources Minister

By Sulaiman Jalloh

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Dr. Hannah Max-Kyne has said negative human activities has adversely affect the quality and volume of water, noting that, protecting water catchment areas, especially in the western area, has been key concern since she assumed office. He said her ministry is working with other ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Lands and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to address the emerging challenges.

“The major challenges that affect or reduce the value of our water system in the country is the depreciation of the green-belt; in fact, along the western peninsular, there was a time when one could see fresh green forest, something she said is important in the quality of water,” she said, noting that deforestation has increased the demand for water in the city, while calling for the protection of the forest as it is critical in adequate water supply.

“We see that people are building all over. You can see someone will go and construct a house under the water dam; people burning coal, doing stone mining everywhere” she said, noting that is not good for the country, because according to her, such activities reduce the value of water which will in turn reduce the supply of water to the growing demand of the population within the western area.

According to the minister, there is no sector and situation without challenge and her ministry is no exception, but said, as a government, they are trying to manage the home-grown resources before looking elsewhere.

“As a responsible government, we are trying to manage our resources within the homegrown resources before looking elsewhere” the minister reiterated.

She was speaking at the weekly press conference of the Ministry of Information and Civic Education held onTuesday, February 13th, 2024 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation conference hall.
