The Government of Sierra Leone has unveiled fifty newly procured electric vehicles ahead of the launch of a new youth-focused commercial transportation initiative aimed at creating jobs, promoting innovation, and advancing environmentally friendly transportation across the country.
The vehicles were inspected at the Water Quay Bolloré Terminal in Freetown by the Minister of Youth Affairs, Ibrahim Sannoh, as part of preparations for the official rollout of the “Youth in Commercial Transportation” programme.
Speaking during the inspection, Minister Sannoh described the initiative as a major step towards modernizing Sierra Leone’s transport sector while creating sustainable employment opportunities for young people. He disclosed that the programme will introduce an Uber-style ride-hailing service powered by electric vehicles.
According to the Minister, the project is designed to empower youths economically by providing them with access to commercial transportation opportunities within the country’s growing digital mobility sector.
Officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs said the initiative is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment for young people, including opportunities for drivers, technicians, vehicle operators, and other support services linked to the transportation industry.
Minister Sannoh further emphasized that the introduction of electric vehicles demonstrates the government’s commitment to innovation, environmental sustainability, and clean energy solutions. He noted that the initiative aligns Sierra Leone with global trends in modern and eco-friendly transportation systems.
The “Youth in Commercial Transportation” programme is expected to commence operations following the completion of operational and logistical arrangements for the deployment of the vehicles.
The initiative forms part of ongoing government efforts to tackle youth unemployment and expand economic opportunities for young people through technology-driven and sustainable development programmes.
