Sierra Leone’s former president, Dr. Earnest Bai Koroma has been granted bail by high court judge, Justice Taylor. The bail is to allow the former leader travel to Nigeria on medical grounds.
The bail comes amid speculations that the Government of Sierra Leone and the regional bloc ECOWAS reached a deal last week to allow the 70-year-old former chairman and leader of the country’s main opposition All People’s Congress Party (APC) party relocate to Nigeria following treason charges against him. The former president is said to have allegedly involved in the 26 November 2023 failed coup.
Earlier in court, lawyers of Koroma sought to review his bail conditions to enable him travel out of Sierra Leone for medical attention within ninety days. The former head of state is expected to travel to Nigeria this week.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Alieu Touray was recently in Freetown to meet with the government on the proposed temporal relocation of former President Koroma to Abuja, Nigeria.
The treason case was adjourned to 6th March 2024.
