Soldiers patrolling streets in Freetown on 26th November 2023

The Republic of Sierra Leone has charged Amadu Koita and 11 others, including ex-police and correctional officers, for their roles in the 26th November, 2023 failed coup. This is according to a public notice from the Ministry of Information and Civic Education dated Tuesday, 2nd January, 2024 and signed by Information Minister Chernor Bah.

The charges include treason, misprision of treason, harbouring, aiding, and abetting the enemy, among others. Eleven (11) accused persons were arraigned before Magistrate Santigie Bangura of the Magistrate Court No. 2 of Freetown. One of the accused persons, Bai Mahmoud Bangura, was reported sick and is currently admitted at the Kingtom Police Hospital. The case has therefore been adjourned to the 9th January 2023. All accused persons had legal representation.

Other accused persons are expected to be charged in the coming days.

The Information Ministry assured that it will continue to provide updates on the investigations and the efforts to bring to justice those responsible for the “atrocities” that happened on 26th November, 2023.

It could be recalled that the government, on 26th November 2023, reported that some unidentified persons attacked the armoury at Wilberforce Barracks, the Central Prison and some police stations in Freetown, leading to unrest, panic, deaths and release of prisoners. Amadu Koita and others were arrested in connection with the incident.
