Central University has celebrated the successful matriculation of over 500 new students in a solemn ceremony held at its campus. The event, attended by parents, academic, and non-academic staff, marked an important milestone in the students’ educational journey as they officially joined one of Sierra Leone’s fastest-growing institutions of higher learning.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice Chancellor and Principal, Professor Bob Karankay Conteh, emphasized the significance of the matriculation ceremony, describing it as “both solemn and sacred.” He noted, “The students we welcome today are not just important to us; they are the best among the many who applied but were not selected. Central University takes pride in producing graduates who excel in their fields, and we are committed to equipping you with the knowledge and skills to do the same.”
Professor Conteh also reassured students of the university’s robust infrastructure and resources, urging them to make the most of the facilities provided. “We have everything you need to achieve academic excellence. Use these resources wisely and develop a habit of speaking English regularly, as communication is key to success in the professional world,” he added.
The Director of Academic Affairs, Handel Mac-Williams, called on students to remain focused and embrace challenges as part of their learning experience. “Success comes through perseverance,” he said. “Your time at Central University will shape your future, and it is essential to stay committed and resilient in your pursuit of knowledge.”
The Dean of Students, Miss Zainab Koroma, warmly welcomed the new students and assured them of the university’s dedication to their well-being. “We are mindful of our responsibility to you, and we operate on a zero-tolerance policy for fraternities or any cult-related activities,” she stated firmly. Miss Koroma encouraged students to engage in approved academic and social organizations, such as the Mass Communication Students Association (MaCoSA), to foster collaboration and personal growth. “My office is always open to provide counseling and mentorship to any student in need,” she added.
In an official presentation, the Registrar, Maligie Sesay, introduced the matriculants to the Vice Chancellor and Principal. He echoed the institution’s stance against cultism, stressing that such activities would not be tolerated. “Our admission portal remains open, and we look forward to welcoming even more students into our university family,” Sesay noted.
The event concluded with the matriculants reciting the university oath in unison, their right hands placed solemnly on their chests, as their proud parents looked on.
The ceremony highlighted Central University’s commitment to academic excellence and moral integrity, setting the tone for the students’ journey ahead. “We have a sense of pride, urgency, and commitment to producing the best graduates,” Professor Conteh affirmed. With its state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated staff, Central University continues to be at the top in terms of higher education in Sierra Leone.
