Four armed robbers, including dismissed police officers were committed to the high court in the magistrate court in Bo presided over by George Edwin.in the Bo judicial district on Friday, 8th November 2024. In his ruling after listening to both the prosecution and defence, magistrate Edwin told the four accused persons that his “hands are tied by the dictates of the law and that he cannot grant them bail as there is murder involved.” Magistrate Edwin took his time reading through the ruling and told the accused persons that they have a case to answer in the high court in Bo. He said he has given the ruling based on the merits of the law and statements brought by both the defence and the prosecution. And also based on what the prosecution and defence witnesses have “presented before the court.”
Few months back in Bo district and other areas within the southern region, there were reported incidents of armed robbery which was getting to alarming rate. A community bank was robbed in Taiama, Moyamba district, a clergy was robbed in Bo with bodily injuries inflicted on him, the mining community at Sierra Rutile was also under attack by robbers. These spates of robberies urged the authorities in Bo to step up security and interestingly some police officers were found to be conniving with robbers and themselves were involved in the act. After so much public outcry, arrests were made and the matter was subsequently charged to court. This singular act by magistrate Edwin has started sending strong message to would-be robbers to desist forthwith as ” there are no sacred cows anymore when it comes to the issue of justice.”
