House Speaker Cautions Committee Chairmen

By Sulaiman Jalloh

House Speaker Hon. Segepoh Thomas

The Speaker of the Sixth Parliament of the second Republic Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas has, during the recent 53rd sitting at the Parliament Building on Tower Hill in Freetown, cautioned all Oversight Committee Chairmen to produce a report for oversight functions.

The Speaker of Parliament dilated that whenever Committee Chairmen apply for funds, they should ensure that a comprehensive report is produced, stressing that colleagues should know exactly what they are going to oversee and achieve and that once it is proven that other colleagues have gone for same, they should retire resources given to them.

Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas furthered that going forward, reaching out to the Director of Committees is mandatory for all committees.

The Speaker maintained that he does not want the public to start doubting the credibility of the House of Parliament, stressing that there is a PFM Act that was passed by the House and therefore the Act should not be undermined by the same Parliament that made the law. “Please honourable members let us serve our conscience and God,” the Speaker advised.

The Speaker of Parliament lashed out at some committee chairmen, noting that they have turned themselves to a court. The lawmaker maintained every recommendation by a committee must be brought before the plenary to be adopted by the entire House of Parliament, stressing that the moment those recommendations are adopted then they become enforceable citing the goll gate charges.
