Ernest Bai Koroma, immediate former president of Sierra Leone has been charged with treason following investigations into a coup attempt on 26th November last year.
The former president and several others have been undergoing investigations in Freetown at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Sierra Leone Police.
In a post on Facebook and X [formerly Twitter], the BBC’s correspondent in Freetown, Umaru Fofanah, wrote, “Sierra Leone’s former president, Ernest Bai Koroma, has just been formally charged with treason. The four-count charge borders on his alleged involvement to overthrow the Government of Sierra Leone on 26 November 2023. The matter has just been stood down at the request of the country’s Attorney General.”
This comes a day after the Government of Sierra Leone announced treason charges for 12 suspects linked to the failed coup, including the organizing secretary of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party.
It could be recalled that the government, on 26th November 2023, reported that some unidentified persons attacked the armoury at Wilberforce Military Barracks, the Central Prison and some police stations in Freetown, leading to unrest, panic, deaths and release of prisoners.
