Haja Ramatulai Wurie, Higher Education Minister

Dr. Ramatulai Wurie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education has disclosed that government is set to open the Kono University of Science and Technology, noting that it will be the hub of technology learning in the country. He said the government was able to secure a loan of thirty-two million dollars ($USD 32m) for the construction of the university in fulfilment ofpart of President Bio’s campaign promises to the people of Kono.

 

Minister Wurie noted that her Ministry is very much committed to ensuring that the university commence operation in the 2023/2024 academic year.

 

According to her, it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the transition team from the Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology for its support in ensuring that the university started operation in 2024.

 

According to the minister, the Ministry will ensure that courses offered at the university would include science, technology and other programs on national development, adding an agency such as the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) will guide the university on its various courses. The Minister added that out of twelve programs presented to TEC, ten have been approved.

 

Detailing some of the courses, she said courses like undergraduate degrees in mining engineering, computer science, information technology; and undergraduate diploma in information technology, business information systems, among others, will be offered at the university.

 

Dr. RamatulaiWurie however noted that the university’s administration has established an online website where applicants can apply.

 

The Higher and Technical Education Minister was speaking at the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s weekly press briefing held at the conference hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Thursday, December 19, 2023.
