Sidie Yahya Tunis – Publicity Secretary of APC
Following the Sunday, November 26th, 2023 security breach which the government has described as a “ failed coup attempt”, Sidie Yahya Tunis, national publicity secretary of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party has said that the party is committed to assisting and reporting any of its members who escaped from lawful detention, noting that it is a civic responsibility of every citizen to report an escaped prisoner, adding that it is also a civic responsibility of any escaped, or illegally released prisoner, to turn themselves to authorities.
Mr. Tunis said, as a political party, they can’t condone any illegality.
He noted that his party will not tolerate any form of lawlessness and that they stand with the Government of Sierra Leone to do a speedy and impartial investigation, adding those found wanting should face the full weight of the law, noting some of the prisoners had committed heinous crimes.
“This is not about SLPP or APC. This is about every Sierra Leonean making sure we help the state security to capture all those suspected,” he pointed, adding that, as a party, they are willing to turn over any of their members in question if only the party knows their whereabouts.
“What happened on Sunday, November 26th, should not be linked to any political party because what occurred on that day surprised everyone and it could have hurt anyone,” he said.
Mr. Tunis said the APC party condemns Sunday’s incident and any other happening that undermine the peace and stability of the country, emphasizing that power should be taken by democratic means and not by the barrel of a gun.
The main opposition’s publicity secretary noted thatit is important for everyone who loves the country to support the President in maintaining the peace and stability of the country.
He however said that pointing fingers at one another will undermine the credibility of the investigation, while reiterating APC’s commitment to supporting the government in conducting a speedy, credible and impartial investigation.
