The Sierra Leone Police has intensified security preparations in Njaluahun Chiefdom, Kailahun District, ahead of the Paramount Chieftaincy Election scheduled for August 30, 2026, as authorities call on stakeholders to maintain peace and ensure a credible electoral process.
Regional Police Commander East, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Joe Kamanda Bongay, led a strategic security engagement with community leaders, election aspirants and security officials as preparations for the poll continue.
The engagement brought together candidates contesting the Paramount Chieftaincy election, including Honourable Wuyatta Songa of Constituency 008, alongside Section Chiefs and Town Chiefs from across Njaluahun Chiefdom.
Members of the Provincial Security Coordinating Committee and the Kailahun District Security Coordinating Committee also participated in the meeting, which focused on strengthening coordination among security actors and local stakeholders ahead of election day.
According to the police, discussions centred on maintaining public order, preventing violence and ensuring that the election is conducted peacefully and in accordance with Sierra Leone’s laws.
Stakeholders were encouraged to exercise restraint, avoid inflammatory conduct and work collectively to prevent incidents that could undermine peace and security before, during and after the election.
The participants reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful electoral process and acknowledged the need for continued cooperation between traditional authorities, political actors, community leaders and security institutions.
ACP Bongay commended residents of Njaluahun Chiefdom for their cooperation with the police and assured the community that adequate security measures were being put in place to protect voters, candidates, electoral officials and other participants.
He warned that the police would take all necessary lawful measures against individuals or groups seeking to disrupt the electoral process.
“The police will take all necessary lawful measures to prevent disruptions and protect the integrity of the vote,” ACP Bongay said.
The Regional Police Commander also condemned intimidation, violence and other forms of lawlessness, stressing that anyone attempting to interfere with the peaceful conduct of the election would face appropriate lawful action.
The latest engagement forms part of wider security preparations for the August 30 poll, as authorities seek to create a safe environment in which eligible voters can participate without fear, intimidation or disruption.
ACP Bongay was accompanied by DSP Edward Kargbo, Regional Coordinator of the Operational Support Division, and DSP Abdulai, the newly transferred Regional Operations Officer East.
With the election date approaching, the police have urged all stakeholders in Njaluahun Chiefdom to place the interests of peace and stability above political or individual interests and to resolve disagreements through lawful and peaceful channels.
