The Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) have received 16 Honda motorbikes from the World Health Organization (WHO), with support from the Pandemic Fund, to strengthen disease surveillance and emergency response efforts across Sierra Leone.
The donation is aimed at improving the detection, monitoring, and rapid response to public health threats, particularly in hard-to-reach and underserved communities where access to health services remains a challenge.
According to the Ministry of Health, the motorbikes will enhance the mobility of frontline health workers, enabling faster transportation of medical samples, improved outreach activities, and quicker response to suspected disease outbreaks.
Health officials stressed that timely surveillance and rapid response are critical to preventing the spread of infectious diseases and ensuring effective outbreak management at both community and national levels.
They noted that the added logistical support will help address existing transportation constraints within the health system, thereby strengthening early warning and response mechanisms across the country.
The World Health Organization, through support from the Pandemic Fund, provided the motorbikes as part of ongoing efforts to reinforce Sierra Leone’s public health preparedness and emergency response capacity.
Officials said the intervention aligns with national priorities to build a more resilient health system capable of responding effectively to current and future public health emergencies.
They further emphasized that strengthening community-level surveillance systems remains essential for protecting public health and ensuring swift action whenever disease threats emerge.
The Ministry of Health expressed appreciation to the World Health Organization and the Pandemic Fund for their continued support, describing the donation as a significant contribution to improving disease monitoring and emergency response nationwide.
