The President of the Police Wives Association (PWA), Matilda Doris Sellu, has concluded a nationwide tour of police barracks across the provinces, highlighting major developmental and welfare gains recorded by the Association since she assumed office in 2022.

The tour, which ran from 9 to 13 February 2026, was designed to engage police officers and police wives directly, provide updates on PWA activities, and strengthen collaboration at barracks level. Throughout the engagements, Mrs Sellu held interactive discussions aimed at repositioning the Association for greater relevance and impact.

She explained that earlier visits to police barracks had created a platform for open dialogue, during which several persistent challenges were identified. These included the lack of access to clean and safe drinking water, poor toilet and sanitation facilities, and limited economic opportunities for police wives.

According to Mrs Sellu, police wives across all barracks unanimously resolved to organise social and fundraising activities to support welfare-driven interventions. Funds generated from these initiatives have since enabled the construction of solar-powered boreholes in nine police barracks in both Freetown and the provinces. Other notable achievements include the construction of toilet and wash facilities at Kingtom Police Barracks, the provision of microcredit loans to police wives in eleven barracks, and the introduction of technical and vocational skills training programmes to enhance household income and self-reliance.

She further disclosed that a recent fundraising outing at Sugar Land Beach yielded Le375,000 after expenses. However, she noted that the growing number of participating barracks nationwide made the amount insufficient for fair loan distribution. As a result, the Association’s national executive and regional representatives agreed to organise another major social activity to boost funds one of the key objectives of her provincial tour.

Police officers across the various barracks commended Mrs Sellu for promoting transparency and accountability, stating that her engagements have helped them better understand the scope and impact of the Association’s work. Many described her leadership style as practical, inclusive, and results-oriented.

Several officers observed that it is unprecedented for the wife of the Inspector General of Police to undertake extensive visits to remote and hard-to-reach divisions to interact directly with police wives and personnel. They cited tangible benefits from her initiatives, including the installation of solar-powered boreholes in barracks in Magburaka, Lunsar, Kailahun, Kenema, Makeni, and other locations.

The tour ended with renewed commitments from police officers to support their wives in advancing the goals of the Police Wives Association. Concerns and suggestions raised during the engagements were documented for follow-up, while some urgent needs such as the provision of water tanks and maintenance of solar-powered boreholes were immediately addressed by Mrs Matilda Doris Sellu, reinforcing the Association’s people-centered approach to welfare and development.
