The Sierra Leone Police on Monday, 19 January 2026, conducted a major right-of-way enforcement operation across several key corridors in Freetown East, aimed at restoring public walkways, improving traffic flow, and enhancing safety for pedestrians and motorists.
The operation was led by the Regional Police Commander for Freetown East, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Brima Kanneh, with support from the Regional Operations Team. The exercise focused on clearing illegal structures and obstructions that had encroached on road reserves and pedestrian pathways.
Affected areas included Benz Garage, Black Hall Road, Taylor Street, Shell Old Road, and Texaco Old Road. During the operation, makeshift stalls, market tables, abandoned vehicles, motorbikes, and kekehs blocking free movement were dismantled and removed. Several illegally parked and abandoned vehicles were also towed away in line with public safety regulations.
Particular attention was given to Ash Street near the Toyota Garage and sections of Taylor Street Old Road, which had been converted into informal garages and identified by police as locations associated with unlawful activities, including drug dealing. These areas were successfully cleared, restoring order and improving visibility and ease of movement.
The exercise recorded notable cooperation from members of the public, with some structure owners voluntarily assisting in the removal and demolition of their illegal constructions from the right-of-way.
Police authorities described the operation as part of a broader nationwide initiative spearheaded by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, to reclaim public spaces, reduce congestion, and ensure safer roads for all users.
Members of the public have been urged to comply with right-of-way regulations and support ongoing efforts to maintain a safe, orderly, and accessible city.
