The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, on Wednesday, 14 January 2026, spearheaded a renewed street-clearing operation aimed at removing illegal structures, roadside garages, and abandoned vehicles from key areas of Central Freetown.
The operation covered Main Street, Jenet Lane, and several adjoining streets within the Kingtom area, as part of ongoing efforts by the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to restore order, enhance public safety, and ease traffic congestion within the city’s Central Business District.
By personally leading the exercise, the IGP reaffirmed the SLP’s commitment to enforcing road safety regulations and eliminating obstructions that endanger pedestrians and motorists. The initiative also seeks to improve access for emergency services while promoting a cleaner, safer, and more organised urban environment.
During the operation, security personnel were deployed to supervise the dismantling of illegally erected structures and the removal of abandoned vehicles from major roadways. Business operators and residents in the affected areas were reminded to adhere to existing regulations and to cooperate with the police in maintaining public order.
The street-clearing exercise is expected to extend to other parts of Central Freetown in the coming days as the SLP intensifies efforts to decongest the city and improve public convenience
The Sierra Leone Police have assured the public that updates will be provided as the operation continues across the Central Business District.
