The Presiding Judge of the High Court in Kenema, Hon. Justice Abdul Sheriff, has sentenced 19-year-old Musa Koroma, a farmer from Pewama Village, Koya Chiefdom, Kenema District, to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of murder.
Musa Koroma was tried alongside two other defendants 23-year-old Abdulai Brima Koroma, also a farmer from Pewama Village, and Abubakarr Swaray, a farmer from Dawebu Village, all of Koya Chiefdom in the Kenema District. The trio faced trial before Justice Sheriff, sitting alone, on two counts: Conspiracy to commit murder and Murder, both contrary to law.
According to the particulars of the offence, on October 16, 2023, the three accused persons conspired with others unknown to commit a felony, to wit, murder. On the same date and at the same venue, they allegedly murdered one Jinnah Sheriff in Koya Chiefdom, Kenema Judicial District, Eastern Province of Sierra Leone.
After reviewing the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defense, the court found Musa Koroma guilty of the offence of murder. He was therefore convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the second defendant, Abdulai Brima Koroma, and the third defendant, Abubakarr Swaray, were acquitted and discharged on both counts after the court found insufficient evidence linking them to the crime.
The case was prosecuted by Andrew F. Kamara, State Counsel and Customary Law Officer in Kenema District, while the three defendants were represented by Patrick Kamara of the Legal Aid Board, Kenema District.
Justice Sheriff, in delivering his judgment, emphasized the need to uphold the sanctity of life and warned that the court would not hesitate to impose severe penalties on anyone found guilty of such heinous crimes.
