The newly elected Executive Body of the Sierra Leone Drivers Union has paid a courtesy visit to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, to express appreciation for the security and professionalism displayed by the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) during the Union’s recent national elections. The meeting took place at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess in Kingtom, Freetown.
Warmly receiving the delegation, IGP Sellu expressed gratitude for the gesture and stressed the importance of mutual respect and sustained collaboration between the Police and the Drivers Union. He underscored that the Police are committed to upholding peace and enforcing the law across all sectors, including transportation, and reminded the Union that “no one is above the law.
He also addressed the frequent tensions that sometimes arise between drivers and law enforcement, clarifying that such disputes often occur when officers are simply performing their lawful duties. The IGP reiterated that the Police presence during the Union elections was to ensure calm and stability a duty they fulfilled without bias.
In his statement, Mr. Ibrahim Sam, the newly elected President of the Sierra Leone Drivers Union, extended heartfelt thanks to the IGP and his team for their role in ensuring a peaceful and orderly election process. He commended the SLP for their neutrality and discipline throughout the electoral period.
Mr. Sam assured the Police that his leadership will work closely with law enforcement to promote lawfulness among commercial drivers nationwide. He emphasized that the Union is aware of its critical responsibility in safeguarding lives and property and pledged to introduce mechanisms that will promote discipline and professionalism among both new and experienced drivers.
Calling for greater understanding and communication between drivers and police officers, Mr. Sam noted that respect on both sides is key to resolving conflicts and building trust.
In his closing remarks, IGP Sellu reiterated that mutual respect must guide all interactions, if drivers respect the Police, the Police will certainly respect them in return respect is reciprocal, he said, urging the new executive to lead by example and uphold discipline within their ranks. He also encouraged members of the Union to give their full support to Mr. Sam’s leadership for the overall progress of the transport sector.
The visit concluded with a symbolic group photograph, capturing the shared spirit of cooperation between the Sierra Leone Police and the newly installed Drivers Union Executive a sign of renewed commitment to peace, safety, and responsible road usage across the country.
