Foreign Affairs Minister Speaks on ECOWAS’ Financial Obligations

By Sulaiman Jalloh

Minister of Foreign Affairs Timothy Musa Kabba,

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Musa Kabba, has addressed concerns about the country’s financial responsibilities as Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He emphasized that the regional bloc is responsible for funding its own operational activities, while Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Finance will provide targeted support to the President’s office during his tenure as Chair.

Speaking at the government’s weekly press briefing on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, Minister Kabba clarified that the ECOWAS Commission funds the bloc’s core operations. He assured that any financial support from Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Finance to the President’s office will be carefully managed so as not to jeopardize the nation’s economy. Citing the 0.5% ECOWAS levy as a sustainable source of revenue, Kabba reassured the public about Sierra Leone’s financial stability.

The Minister also acknowledged the sacrifices made by other nations in support of Sierra Leone in the past and highlighted President Bio’s strong commitment to positioning Sierra Leone as a key player on the international stage.
