Magburaka, Sierra Leone: A new chapter in Sierra Leone’s sporting history has been written. Aminata Fullah, a trailblazing referee from Tonkolili District, has been officially selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to officiate at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26.
Fullah’s selection marks a historic first: she is the first female referee from Sierra Leone to officiate at such a prestigious continental tournament. The announcement has sparked widespread admiration across the nation and the African continent, symbolizing a significant step forward for female representation in sports officiating.
Having earned her FIFA referee badge in 2024, Aminata Fullah has consistently demonstrated professionalism, composure, and integrity on the pitch.
Her outstanding performances in the Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League, National Super Ten matches, and other regional competitions made her an obvious candidate for promotion to the continental level.
CAF’s inclusion of Fullah in this year’s elite officiating team reflects the organization’s growing commitment to gender equality and excellence in officiating across Africa.
In an exclusive interview with Hope Times Newspaper, Fullah shared her reflections on the honor, her journey, and her hopes for the future.
“It’s truly an honor. Being the first female referee from Sierra Leone selected to officiate at WAFCON is both humbling and empowering.
This is not just about me; it’s about every young girl in Sierra Leone and across Africa who dreams of making it to the highest level.
I carry their hopes with me.”
On the factors that led to her selection, Fullah credited her work ethic and strong support system:
“Dedication, discipline, and continuous learning. I’ve always believed that if you put in the work, stay focused, and remain true to your values, opportunities will come.
I’m also deeply grateful to the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), my mentors, and my family for their unwavering support.
Without them, this wouldn’t have been possible.”
Fullah also expressed her appreciation for the Sierra Leone Government and sports authorities while calling for further investment:
“I want to thank the Government and SLFA for the growing investment in women’s sports.
But there is still more to be done – especially in grassroots development and officiating.
We need more structured training programs, access to equipment, and opportunities for young women to grow.”
To young aspiring female referees across Africa, her message was clear and powerful:
“Believe in yourself and stay the course.
The path will not always be smooth; there will be challenges, stereotypes, and moments of doubt.
But never let anyone limit your dreams.
Hard work, consistency, and courage will take you where talent alone cannot.”
Aminata Fullah’s success is a source of national pride and a beacon of hope for the empowerment of women in sports.
Her story sends a strong message to communities across Sierra Leone, particularly in underserved regions like Tonkolili – that talent, when nurtured with commitment and support, can transcend barriers.
Tonkolili District is abuzz with celebration. Local leaders, youth groups, and sports associations have hailed her as a “national treasure” and “an inspiration to generations of young women.”
As Africa prepares for a thrilling WAFCON 2025, all eyes will be on the field; and on the determined, history-making Sierra Leonean woman proudly wearing the referee’s badge.
With poise, professionalism, and patriotism, Aminata Fullah will represent her country and the dreams of many on one of the continent’s biggest sporting stages.
