A 45-year-old man, Kemoh Mannah, a pastor residing in Gombu Layout on the outskirts of Kenema City, has been sentenced to one year in prison or ordered to pay a fine of five thousand New Leones (NLe 5,000) for committing domestic violence, the sentence was handed down by Magistrate Wilbri Hamida M. John of magistrate Court No. 2 in Kenema, following Mannah’s conviction under Section 2(1) of the Domestic Violence Act No. 20 of 2007.
According to the prosecution, on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at Gombu Layout in Nongowa Chiefdom, Kenema Judicial District, Eastern province, Kemoh Mannah physically assaulted his wife, Melrose Mannah, with whom he shares a domestic relationship, the court also heard that on the same date and at the same location, the accused emotionally and verbally abused his wife, including calling her a prostitute, causing her repeated emotional distress, when the charges were read in court, Pastor Mannah pleaded guilty to counts one (physical assault) and three (verbal abuse), but denied count two, which involved emotional abuse.
In delivering her judgment, Magistrate Wilbri Hamida M. John clarified that the fine is to be paid into the Consolidated Revenue Fund through the National Revenue Authority (NRA) and not to the complainant. She advised the accused to obtain an official receipt from the NRA office in Kenema if he chose to pay the fine, the prosecution of the case was led by Woman Police Sergeant Watta Bakarr, attached to the Legal and Justice Support Department at the Kenema Police Station.
