NPHA Receive Donation Of MPox

By Aminata A.B. Kamara

The National Public Health Agency (NPHA) on January 21, 2025, received a significant donation of sample collection kits for MPox, a zoonotic disease previously known as monkeypox. The donation, made possible through UC Davis in collaboration with Health Experts Advancing Development and Aid (HEADA), was officially received by Madam Doris Harding, Manager of Integrated Public Health Reference Laboratories.

MPox, a disease that spreads from animals to humans, has posed a significant public health challenge globally. The donation is a timely boost to Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to curb the disease and prevent its spread. The Integrated Public Health Reference Laboratory plays a critical role in the fight against infectious diseases by conducting comprehensive diagnostic services, routine surveillance, and outbreak investigations. During disease outbreaks, the laboratory ensures timely and accurate testing to monitor and contain the spread of infections effectively.

UC Davis and HEADA have consistently supported Sierra Leone’s public health sector, providing resources, training, and technical expertise to strengthen the country’s response capabilities. This collaboration highlights the importance of global partnerships in addressing public health emergencies.

Expressing gratitude for the donation, the Ministry of Health and NPHA Executive Director, Professor Foday Sahr, acknowledged the vital contributions from UC Davis and other partners during this challenging period. “These donations are critical in controlling the spread of MPox and safeguarding the health of our communities,” Professor Sahr remarked.

The NPHA continues to urge the public to stay informed and adhere to preventive measures to protect themselves and their communities from MPox.

This donation underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in combating public health threats and ensuring the safety and well-being of the nation.
