The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) has successfully restored water supply to Port Loko, Northern Sierra Leone. It was reported that the continuous blasting of the Degremont Control Panel which had been in operation for ages would have caused unbearable damage to the Treatment Plant and Operators, as narrated by Ing. Hamid A. Kamara, SALWACO’s Station Manager in Port Loko.
However, the old panel has been replaced by a new water treatment control panel.
The water supply disruption, which lasted for over three weeks, was caused by a major technical fault at the main treatment plant. The issue affected thousands of households, leaving residents to rely on unsafe sources, including wells and streams, for their daily needs.
SALWACO technicians and engineers worked around the clock to fix the problem. The company collaborated with local authorities and international partners to secure the resources needed for repairs. In a press briefing, the Regional Manager expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, “This achievement underscores SALWACO’s commitment to ensuring safe and reliable water supply for all Sierra Leoneans.”
The hardest-hit areas included residential neighborhoods, schools, and health facilities in central Port Loko. Residents described the period of water shortage as challenging, especially for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.
Water flow resumed on the evening of December 3, 2024, to the delight of the local population. “Hearing the sound of running water again was a moment of joy for us,” said Fatmata Kamara, a resident.
Access to clean water is vital for hygiene, health, and overall community well-being. The restoration of supply not only addresses immediate needs but also reduces the risks of waterborne diseases, which tend to spike during shortages.
SALWACO deployed a team of specialists to replace damaged components at the treatment plant. Advanced diagnostic equipment was used to identify and fix faults efficiently. In addition, the company has pledged to implement a long-term maintenance plan to prevent future disruptions.
The restoration of water supply marks a significant milestone for Port Loko, and SALWACO’s efforts have been lauded by residents and stakeholders alike. Moving forward, residents hope for consistent service and continued investments in the district’s water infrastructure.
SALWACO assures its clients and customers of safe and reliable water supply while urging all and sundry to accordingly pay for services as justified.
